Why You Should Opt For Shelters Instead Of Breeders

Shelters are becoming more and more packed with animals every single day. If you visit your local shelter online, you’ll notice that they’re probably having issues intaking so many dogs. If you’re interested in getting a new dog, the best option for you would be to go for a shelter dog. Many people have misconceptions about shelter dogs, but it’s all about the way you think about training and the worthiness of that dogs life. If you’re interested in getting a new dog, even if you want to get a certain breed, keep reading for reasons why you should first check as many shelters as possible.

The first reason that you should adopt a shelter dog is that it’s less expensive. This is because breeders generally overcharge for their dogs. Not only that, but the medical bills for shelter dogs can generally be lower because of the amount of money that may go into medical issues that certain breeds may have. Certain breeds of dogs have a lot more medical issues because breeding the way that dog breeders do can cause a ton of issues for the dog. This goes through the generations, and it only gets worse with time. This is an excellent reason to think about getting a shelter dog, because not only will it be less expensive up front and in the future, but you’ll also not be supporting the over breeding of animals that will have medical problems in the future. Of course, not all breeds have medical issues, but many of the most popular dogs do, and this creates an atmosphere in the dog world that leads to animals dying faster and getting sick more often.

Another reason that you should get a shelter dog is because they’re awesome companions. Many people have the misconception that shelter dogs can not be trained. While it’s true that it may be a bit more difficult to train an older dog, it’s not impossible. All dogs require a degree of responsibility and awareness, and those just change when it comes to shelter dog. You may also notice that getting a senior dog is an excellent decision for a family. Senior dogs generally are more well behaved and are a great way to add a dog to your family. Puppies can be difficult to have with children, because you need to do a lot of one on one training with them.

Often times, you can get certain breeds at the shelter if you’re interested in getting a certain breed more than anything else. The least you could do would be to make sure that you check the shelters for the kind of dog you want. Because of the influx of people buying dogs and not being able to take care of them, shelters have dogs of many breeds. Even going for a dog that is half of the breed you want can be an excellent idea.  You’re also more likely to find a date when you have a dog, as studies have shown that women like men with dogs more. Find a great Brooks Brothers outfit and take off to your local park to meet another addition to your family.…

Five Common Misconceptions About Pet Adoption

We put together a list of common Pet adoption common myths, in the desires that you can gently point friends toward this post when they speak about adding a pet to their family.

Myth #1: I don’t know what I’m getting

There may in reality become more information available about an adoptable dog or cat than one from a breeder or pet store.

Lots of the pets posted on Petfinder are in foster treatment. Foster parents live with their charges 24-7 and can often tell you, in detail, about the pet’s personality and behaviors. If the pet is at a shelter, the staff or volunteers might be able to let you know what he or she is like.

At the very least, you can ask the staff if your pet was an owner surrender (rather than a stray) and, if so, the particular past owner said about her or him. Quite often house animals are given up because the dog owner confronted financial or property issues (more on that later).

Myth #2: I can’t find what I’d like at a shelter

If you cannot find your pet you are considering on Petfinder, don’t give up. Some shelters maintain waiting lists for specific breeds, so don’t be fearful to ask! There are also breed-specific rescues for almost every breed, and the majority of them post their dogs and cats on Petfinder. Myth #3: I can get a free pet, so why pay a Pet adoption price?

According to the National Council on Dog or cat Population Study and Coverage (via the ASPCA), roughly 65% of pet parents in the U.S. get their pets for free or at low cost, and most pets are extracted from acquaintances or members of the family. The NCPPSP also reports that pets bought from friends constitute more than 30% of dogs surrendered to shelters (read the article here).

Whilst getting a “free” pet may seem like a bargain at first, you’re then in charge of veterinary costs that shelters and save groupings usually cover, including:

  • Spaying/neutering $150-300
  • Distemper vaccination $20-30 x2
  • Rabies vaccination $15-25
  • Heartworm test $15-35
  • Flea/tick treatment $50-200
  • Microchip $50

Myth #4: Dogs are in shelters because they didn’t make good pets

In fact, the primary reasons Pet adoption up includes:

  • Owners are moving to property that never let pets (7% canines, 8% pet cats)
  • Allergies (8% felines)
  • Owner having personal problems (4% dogs and cats)
  • Too many or no room for litter mates (7% dogs, 17% cats)
  • Owner can no longer afford the dog or cat (5% puppies, 6% pet cats)
  • Owner no longer has time for your pet (4% puppies)

As you can plainly see, many of the reasons have nothing to do with the household pets themselves. Dealing with shelter staff and volunteers can be considered a great way to determine the best match for you and your home.

Misconception #5: Shelter pets have too much baggage

Rescued household pets have full histories … something that can in fact be GREAT for adopters. Bear in mind, all house animals- even eight-week old puppies and kittens — have unique personalities. Those personalities will either jive with your home and lifestyle or not.  Work with recovery group or shelter personnel to find the right fit for you.

Why we love our dogs

There are too many people that don’t consider pet adoption, because they don’t want to get a dog for their homes. There are so many people that don’t see the necessary of having a dog, or getting a dog for their children. Or, people are only getting and buying puppies and doesn’t consider adopting. There are so many reasons why we love our dogs, and why it is recommended that every household should adopt a dog from a shelter. Here are some reasons why dogs are lovable and why you should adopt a dog:

Men’s best friend

We love our dogs, because you will not get a better friend that is going to be more loyal than your dog. It doesn’t matter if you are going to consider pet adoption or if you are going to purchase a puppy. If you are treating your dog nice, and you love your dog, he will love you back.

Cat lovers don’t have the friendship with their pets as people have their dogs. This is just not the same in having a cat than having a dog. With a dog, you can go for walks, get wet kisses when you arrive home, after a day at the office and just have someone that depends on you, no matter what.

There are many people that don’t have families anymore, or they are too busy for getting a family, so they consider pet adoption. This is because with adopting a dog, you will have the companionship that you are looking for, and can’t have, because you don’t have a family.

Dogs are always there for their humans. They will be there if you are sick, sad or just watching television. With a dog, you will never be alone again.

Adoption dogs are friendlier

People don’t like adopting dogs from shelters like the Barbara Bruin New Mexico shelter. They are afraid to adopt a larger dog that is older and that doesn’t know you as well as what a puppy will be.

However, if you are adopting an older dog from a shelter, the dog will be friendlier and will be grateful towards you for rescuing him. He really knows that you saved them from being in a cage the rest of his life. More details here: https://www.buzzfeed.com/kaelintully/youre-the-best-friend-that-i-ever-had

Save a life

When you are going to a shelter and consider pet adoption, you are actually going to save that dog’s life.

Those people who have dogs, will know that dogs can be a men’s best friend. And, with good reason, we all love dogs, because of the companionship, friendship and trust that the dogs have with their humans.
